CHAPTER TWELVE
Kelsey groaned. She thought the hospital was the last place she wanted to be, but in a hospital bed under the stern gaze of SAC Granger was much, much worse. If she could up and walk out, she would. The best she could do was to look away.
"I don't need you to tell me I messed up," Kelsey muttered.
"And I thought hell would freeze over before I heard Special Agent Hawk admit she was wrong." Granger pulled the chair John had been sitting a little farther from the bed and sat down, placing a folder on his lap.
It felt petty for Kelsey not to look at him now, so she looked his way. "I never admitted I was wrong, only that you might suggest I messed up."
Granger gave a wry smile. "You were almost killed twice in one dayâit's a miracle you are alive, Hawk."
Kelsey felt suffocated in the room. It would have been more bearable if a heart monitor was constantly beeping, but there was only an oppressive silence. The dim lights above bathed the cream walls in a dull orange glow, drawing them in. The room was not small, and she had it to herself, but it still felt constricting. Kelsey felt suffocated by the car crash, the explosion, the past, the futility of chasing this case, a lack of a real home, and her ex-boss breathing down her neck.
"Bet you wish I had died," Kelsey said.
Granger sighed and shook his head. "No, I don't wish that, Hawk. How do you feel?"
"Like you care."
"Why do you think Iâm here?" Granger asked.
"To have me fired," she suggested.
"Not yet," Hawk said. "Iâll adhere to the deputy directorâs suggestion even though I do believe you should be fired. When I heard what happened, I came straight here. I know we don't see eye to eye, and I don't believe we ever will, but you are an FBI agent, and that counts for something. I really wish you would find another line of work, but I don't wish you dead, Hawk."
Kelsey looked him in the eye, trying to find the trick. She saw the usual distaste there, but there was a morsel of compassion, too. She had to admit that in her time working for him and after, he had never done anything to get her fired. He had only used her pigheadedness as fuel for the fireâno sneaky tricks or traps.
"Why do you hate me so much?" Kelsey asked.
"Hate is a strong word," Granger replied.
"Is it? You want me out of your life because you are worried about what I might uncover. You want to halt my investigation into the past because of what I will discover about you and your connection to my family. Youâre scared of me."
Granger looked away and shook his head. "Iâm not scared of you, but I am scared of what you might do. Don't throw false accusations at me about things you know nothing about. You think you have it all figured out, but you know nothing.
